Fortisimo Posted December 24, 2005 Posted December 24, 2005 Just an oversensitive admin removing a post for little to no reason. THe post simply stated that some school (I can't remember which one) performed exclusively Key Poulan shows and suggested that since I hate Key Poulan, I would probably hate them. But, of course I don't. I pity them. They are stuck with subpar shows... I know, we did his shows for 2 years. I'm glad we got away from that. Quote

mindfulmusician Posted December 25, 2005 Posted December 25, 2005 Ok...I'm still confused...anyway, let's just make amends and move on in the spirit of brotherhood, which this holiday season represents. So...eggnog...lol...but, seriously...back to music... - mm Quote
MartinHorn Posted December 28, 2005 Author Posted December 28, 2005 It looks like people think a show needs a slow movement. Quote
Fortisimo Posted December 28, 2005 Posted December 28, 2005 I steadfastly assert that embedded slow portions are by far superior in the context of marching shows. Quote
EODrillDesigner98 Posted December 30, 2005 Posted December 30, 2005 As a Arranger/Composer and Futuer Band Director. I dont think its necessary to have a slow movement in our show. Quote
Aegis Fang Posted January 7, 2006 Posted January 7, 2006 It doesn't have to... but any 4A or 5A band worth their weight in beans should be able to play loud and obnoxiously. But not a whole lot of bands have a dynamic range that allow them to play a slow part effectively. I think showing a judge that you DO have that dynamic range is essential to being a superior marching band. Quote
MartinHorn Posted January 16, 2006 Author Posted January 16, 2006 Quote but any 4A or 5A band worth their weight in beans should be able to play loud and obnoxiously. Actually I think if the band is worth their weight in beans they will know how to play loud without being obnoxious. Quote
itsstephenyo Posted January 17, 2006 Posted January 17, 2006 its much harder to sound good at ppp than it is at fff Quote
ClaireAnnette07 Posted January 17, 2006 Posted January 17, 2006 If you want my opinion (which it really doesnt matter cuz you're getting it anyway, lol), it IS necessary to have a slow movement. The slow movement is the movement that makes the show a real show! Not to mention that, in my clarinet instructors words, it separates the meat from the potatoes in the competiton. That and the slow movements give us a break from the fast-paced opener before the fast-paced closer. At least, that's how it's been since I've gotten to high school Quote
Fortisimo Posted January 17, 2006 Posted January 17, 2006 What about a 4 or 5 Mvt structured show though? Should it have one, two, or no exclusively slow Mvt, just embedded slow parts? Quote
davidpowell Posted January 17, 2006 Posted January 17, 2006 Heh I would prefer the whole show be slow... That's just me though. Quote
TRtrumpet Posted January 17, 2006 Posted January 17, 2006 Same here. I love slow movements... there so much more rewarding if you can play them correctly. Quote
Fortisimo Posted January 19, 2006 Posted January 19, 2006 Wow, I'm glad you don't have any say over what our band does, lmao. That would probably be, in my opinion, the most homosexual show ever. I mean, a completely slow marching show? That's just weak. If you wanna do something like that, go play concert band music. Bad concert music at that. Lol, actually there is some good slow concert pieces like Sleep, but not very many. Most are boring and anticlimatic. Quote
itsstephenyo Posted January 19, 2006 Posted January 19, 2006 u need to listen to more lyrical music and expand ur horizons a little bit in the music world. there are countless numbers of pieces out there that are incredibly beautiful. a climax in a piece doesnt exactly have to be super-loud either. there's more to music than just playing ff. that's wat lyrical pieces are for. Yes, if you listen to what is classified as "BAND" music. But when you get into the realms of Whitacre, Ticheli and so forth, it gets amazing. Just wondering, ever heard of a guy named Gustav Mahler? Yeah, his stuff tends to be kind of slow. And it tends to be some of the most genious stuff ever written. And just a little "side-idea", if you will, here: The majority of "fast and loud" shows are over-climactic, which is even worse than anti-climactic. Quote

If you have any links for any of his music please post them. Quote
itsstephenyo Posted January 20, 2006 Posted January 20, 2006 uh i have mahler's 5th and 6th symphonies. Quote
