Unfortunately, these threads I start every year never gain much traction. I wish there were more of a guard presence here. I'm not sure where they all hang out. It would be nice to have some real discussion with people who are actually currently involved in the activity. Like, why is XYZ your favorite, or why didn't you care for this or that. Alas, we don't get much of that on here outside of the big-time marching band contest threads.

WGI has posted some kind of, sort of results for Finals. Finalists were categorized into 5 groups: Master (all 1s in all 6 captions), Expert, Exceptional, Distinguished, and Outstanding. The standard for a rating value of 1 was "raised to reflect historic upper echelon finalists." This is a bit vague, but I'm guessing "upper echelon" here means top 5-ish at Worlds in a normal year? Not really sure. Anyway, WGI recognized both Master and Expert finalists. Only 11 groups in the world received the Master designation; 45 received the Expert designation.

 

Congrats to the three TX groups that received Master designations!

Lubbock-Cooper HS (SRA)

McCullough JH Varsity (Junior)

Spring ISD (IRA)

 

And congrats to the nine TX groups that received Expert designations!

Bastrop HS (SRA)

Cedar Park HS JV (SRA)

Frisco Centennial HS (SRA)

Hebron HS JV (SRA)

James E. Taylor HS (SO)

Legacy HS (SRA)

Round Rock Middle School (Junior)

South Grand Prairie HS (SRA)

The Woodlands HS (SW)

It's possible to make some inferences from the available ratings.

Lubbock-Cooper was the only group to get the Master designation in Scholastic Regional A, so there's your SRA champion!

Blue Springs was the only group to get a Master designation in the Scholastic A class, so there's your champion!

Laguna Creek and Milford were the only two Scholastic Open groups to receive a Master designation.

Badger Middle School and McCullough JH Varsity were the only two Junior groups to receive Master designations.

Can't figure out the top dog in the SW class this year. As expected, both Avon and Center Grove got Master designations, and were the only 2 Scholastic World Class groups to do so. Both are very well-deserved. In my view, they had easily the two best shows of the entire competition, Independent Class included. That's not to knock some of the other fine groups in the world class. I did enjoy Onyx, even though they chose a video for finals in which they opened their show with a drop. (Use the format to your advantage, people!) I'm also happy The Woodlands was able to hang with some consistent world class finalists, and even "beat" Miamisburg and Norwin -- both consistent world class finalists, who placed 5th and 7th the last time the world championships were held (in 2019).

But yeah, this year really wasn't about the competition. It was more of a showcase for the hard work and perseverance of the performers.

Congratulations to the Inaugural cast and staff of Omega for receiving an “Expert” rating for the 2021 WGI Independent A Class Finals Championship!   Only 10 of 30 Finalists received an "Expert" or "Master" rating putting Omega in the top 10 IA guard's internationally this year!  

Great first year achievement!

fyi:  Omega is based in Central Texas near Austin.

Does anyone know the name of Hendrickson’s 2021 show?  I can’t find it to save my life!  I’m trying to feature them tomorrow for Winterguard Wednesday on my Instagram page. I also think I have the ONLY Hendrickson guard video posted on DaTube, crazy enough!
