2021 BOA McAllen (Sept. 18)

Second Block Thoughts:

Nicki Rowe: Nicki Rowe was the first to perform and they did just that.

Georgetown: After some technical difficulties were overcome, Georgetown proved what a force it can become in the band world and will possibly be a finalist contender.

Weiss: Overcoming technological adversity again, Weiss showed why they made state finals in 2019. This band will most likely be a finalist in part due to its balanced sound and effective guard and may very well place  relatively high and capture a class championship along the way.

Grapevine: While small, Grapevine packs a punch in its sound and is a possible finalist contender. The flute solo in the ballad adds to the effectiveness of this band.

Santa Rosa: Santa Rosa showed that they love to perform and compete. This band is small but mighty.

Valley View: Returning to the field, Valley View came to perform, and their eagerness and love for the activity was clearly evident.

United: The largest band that has performed today, United pack a punch. Opening with a trombone solo, the band followed suit and proved that they did not come to play. United is a possible finalist contender.

Harlingen South: A relatively small group, the band opened with a small woodwind ensemble playing Richter. A pretty impressive sound is produced by this impressive group.

Looks like the 3 Box5 boom mic's for the band are high up and close to the field.   Some of the band provided speakers may be behind  or parallel with them so the sound will not pick up as good online from the solo speakers.

wonder if they will delay so long that there will be no finals?

same risk in Austin next week with temps in the 90's that turf is going to be above 100 degrees by the afternoon

I remember one BOA Dallas back in 2013, it was probably a little less hot than it is right now in McAllen but the effect was much the same. One of our quad players fainted marching off the field and nearly cracked the back of his head open. Too bad we can’t get more indoor venues for these contests.

You have to go to the McAllen "Finals" page to view it on Box5.   (unless it's problems getting on Box5 in the first place and not just the McAllen contest).

I know it's obviously because of the repertoire overlap, but Brandeis' opener is reminding me of Cedar Ridge 2013, and it makes me happy.

Roma may very well win their class and possibly medal.

JB Alexander has the potential to metal gold yet again.

It was a great contest other than the terrible heat. Seems like this regional should be moved to later in the season rather than having it always be the first contest!  I mean come on, it gets HOT in South Texas. ??

Congrats to Brandeis for being the first NISD band, at least to my knowledge, to ever medal in a BOA event. Definitely the first NISD band to outright take the gold.
