I didn't fall for that dumb spirit show video on YouTube this time. Go me! Expand After seeing DB and Wando on Box5 today, my opinion is that they are better than Wando right now, and have a great shot at taking a finals slot. Wando can come back, but they need lots of cleaning in their show. Quote
principalagent Posted October 17, 2021 Posted October 17, 2021 Dobyns-Bennett is stupid good. I think it's their best show yet and the others don't come close. So much care, intentionality, nuance in their music book and the visual book is doing great to set the kids and the theme up. The chorus has to be one of the best in marching band in the last decade, and everything is working seamlessly together. I think they're in finals, and I don't think they're 12th either. Quote
Rubisco Posted October 17, 2021 Posted October 17, 2021 I'll try to catch the last half of Jacksonville finals on my phone later tonight. I'm cleaning my entire house right now. It's not fun. Quote
LeanderMomma Posted October 17, 2021 Author Posted October 17, 2021 I’m ready to watch Dobyns Bennett with a different eye in finals than prelims because I wasn’t feeling it then. Quote
Rubisco Posted October 17, 2021 Posted October 17, 2021 Awww, they have Tim Hinton doing commentary! That's nice. I could never do that. I'm not positive enough. I'd be like, "Yeah, it was a cool theme, but did you hear those intonation issues?" I would have every band parent coming after me. I definitely belong behind the scenes! ? Quote
Rubisco Posted October 17, 2021 Posted October 17, 2021 The choir in DB's show is probably my favorite thing about the show. Really beautiful. Just adds that special extra musical layer. Costumes and music are all a little bit recycled. Broken Arrow 2019 haunts this show, as does every other band that has done Appalachian Spring and The Promise of Living. I like the mountains in the background, but sometimes it makes the visual program seem very confined. I felt like I was getting similar visual moments a lot. I love the energy of the performance, but the brass are overblowing a bit. Some very pinched and unbalanced sounds. That lends itself to a lack of musical clarity at times. For example, I could barely hear the moving line in the opening Appalachian Spring hit. Overall, I enjoy the program a lot, but I think they'll need to iron out some performance issues to make finals at Nats. Quote
Rubisco Posted October 17, 2021 Posted October 17, 2021 Awww, I really liked Hernando! Just goes to show that great things can be done with a smaller group! Really good guard execution, too. Quote
Rubisco Posted October 17, 2021 Posted October 17, 2021 Well, I definitely give Wando originality points! Such an odd cast of characters and interesting use of the source music. But overall, this contest has made me feel slightly better about the TX bubble bands. Definitely the music execution should elevate them, based on these early-ish performances. LeanderMomma 1 Quote

Rubisco Posted October 17, 2021 Posted October 17, 2021 There's a recent video of Carmel from an ISSMA regional contest that was posted a little bit ago. It's the full show this time. Really cool how Saucedo has played with the Rachmaninoff music. I just wish the brass sound was... better. Like, calmer, more focused, and better balanced. It was really only during the ballad that I felt like I (briefly) got that classic Carmel sound. Guard has gotten significantly better since that last video and looks more like what you'd expect. Love the blue flags! Visual program overall is a bit familiar, but effective. I'll need to see it from higher up. There's clearly stuff going on behind the giant props. Quote
Origin Posted October 17, 2021 Posted October 17, 2021 I love Carmel’s show! Love the Paganini. Maybe my favorite of theirs since Adagio Presto. Also saw Broken Arrow. The visual scale they create on the field is insane. The ballad was stunning (before the video got cut off). I think I would predict them winning the eagle right now. Quote
Rubisco Posted October 17, 2021 Posted October 17, 2021 I came back here to talk about Broken Arrow again. You all should watch the video with the costumes and colored props. GORGEOUS show. I don't see anything topping this at Nationals right now. I bet this ends up being my favorite show of theirs, which is saying a lot. zharston 1 Quote
Popular Post slowbrass Posted October 17, 2021 Popular Post Posted October 17, 2021 Got the chance to see Flower Mound in person last night. From what I saw, I think they have a bit more planned for the vocal soloists from the tuba feature. I hadn’t noticed it before (possibly due to only seeing videos until now) but that group of five or so marchers spend the rest of the show without instruments. They still have their own drill and choreography though. In general they’re sounding pretty good, /very/ loud. Tami, northtexasbandfan and FloMoParent 3 Quote
Popular Post Rubisco Posted October 19, 2021 Popular Post Posted October 19, 2021 Wandered over to Music for All and got the judging panels for this event. Prelims Panel A: Ryan Brittain (howdy, Westfield alum and amazing horn player!), Dave Carbone, Glenn Fugett, W. Dale Warren, Ken Giese, John Howell, and Michael Turner. Prelims Panel B: John Alstrin, George Boulden, Nola Jones, Gregg Williams, Lee Carlson, Robert Solomon, and Jim Sturgeon. Semis Panel: Mike Howard, Jay Kennedy, Chester Phillips, Ken Turner, Curtis Costanza, Marie Czapinski, and Tim Ochran. Finals Panel: George Boulden, Glenn Fugett, Nola Jones, Greg Williams, John Howell, Jim Sturgeon, and Michael Turner. No major red flag judges for me, at least when comparing things to my tastes. Well, maybe a couple of slight ones on the semis panel, but hopefully any quirkiness is balanced out. Semis will already be the most nail-biting contest this year. If I had to guess finals assignments, I'd say Nola Jones and Glenn Fugett on Music GE, George Boulden and Greg Williams on Music Performance, Michael Turner on Individual Visual, Jim Sturgeon on Ensemble Visual, and John Howell on Visual GE. But maybe BOA will change it up a little. An Inspirational Pinecone, LeanderMomma and TWHSParent 3 Quote

BandFan59 Posted October 20, 2021 Posted October 20, 2021 Panel 1 is definitely the stronger panel.
