Big sounds, great shows, tight marching, enthralled crowds, and a wonderful full retreat and celebration. I think the new scoring will shake things up a bit but the real question is, which way will that go? My first glance thought it would reward more BOA style bands. Expand Just take the days off and come to one of the best shows you'll ever get to see. You only have 2 chances to see your kid perform in this show. Prelims are great. Plenty of seating as fans file in and out to see the bands they want to. Finals get announced and then anticipation goes into overdrive. For finals, people line up early. It's a real celebratory environment (and nerves for the parents whose kids are marching). That first band comes out and all of that nervous energy goes away from the crowd. Now it's 140 minutes to enjoy bands, reminisce on the season, and hope for joy for your favorite band/kid. Last band leaves the field and the crowd starts buzzing. "Who do you have in 1st? What's your favorite show? Congrats, I love your kid's band. Let's hope for the best. Etc..." Then the full retreat starts. Drumline brings out all of the bands and the entire field is filled with beautiful colors. Awards ceremony. Places are awarded. Then the bands celebrate on field. It's a wonderful sight. Absolutely do it. I don't even have a kid in high school anymore and I won't miss 5A and 6A SMBC. LeanderMomma, WoodlandsMom4ever, Quadmom68 and 10 others 11 2 Quote

I've been to State twice with our kids and I can echo what MikeKyu said...GO! You never know if you'll get to do it again and it's a blast. I don't know which school you're with but one bit of advice, temper you expectations as a parent. It will make the experience much more enjoyable. When we went to state, I knew our band wasn't going to win...it was virtually impossible for them to win but when they made finals? pfffft...THAT was my personal victory. Your band made it to State...the rest is gravy!! If they make finals...even better! Just being in finals means that you're band is one of the top 10 in 5A....just consider that for a second. Even if they don't, just look at the journey that got them to San Antonio. Go...have fun...but also enjoy the individual victories and support every other band, too, because we all know how hard each of these kids have worked to make it there. Popular Post LostChoirGuy Posted October 26, 2021 Popular Post Posted October 26, 2021 As a band fan, it actually is sad how few contests I have been to. But when I was in 7th grade, my sister's band made state and my parents and I drove to San Antonio to see her perform. Even though we were only able to stay for one block and her band didnt make finals, it was one of my favorite experiences ever at a band contest and it meant so much to her.
