Your director was mistaken.  The panel was filled by experienced, seasoned directors with tons of accolades.  Don’t think band size had anything to do with it.  March well and play well (preferably at the same time, lol) and that will get you a birth to the State Championships

I think based on their performance today we can see that they DID do that. Perhaps not state championships, but definitely not 10th.

The panel included 1 current director with over 20 years experience, 1 retired director, 1 director of fine arts with 25+ years teaching experience, 1 additional fine arts coordinator with 15+ years teaching experience and 1 current director also with 15+ years teaching experience (who currently teaches at a school with around 120 students in their band).  I wouldn’t call this panel young or inexperienced at all.

while i agree that playing and marching ability have a huge impact on scores, marching band is a subjective sport. unfortunately what the judges like and dislike can affect scores.

you wanna tell me legacy didn’t have a better finals run than ANY other bands. Not a single other band in finals had a worse run than Legacy??

there’s a difference between teaching/directing experience and judging experience. they may be experienced in the music and marching category, but may have a hard time when removing biases.

This was not a dig at the Legacy program from me, just a comment in general about the programs that advance (from all area contests).

I guarantee you, as a director and a seasoned judge, I have judged several times with multiple members of this panel.  They all have experience judging marching band.

While I understand that argument about band size, check out this school from the 2015 UIL 2A State Marching Contest.
 

Sundown HS has ~150 in the band in this video while just checking the Legacy HS video posted minutes ago, has ~120 members. 

I do no not think Sundown HS can compete with similar sized bands from 4A, 5A, 6A classifications.

I agree, the judges are more than qualified to be judging this contest, but their scores are all over the place. Azle getting 2nd, 7th and 10th in music? And Birdville getting 4th and 10th in marching? Does not add up.

Just got back home.

Also, I am so, so, so proud of the Summit program. First time going to state! It’s really incredible how much this program has grown in the past five years or so. Wish I could make it down to San Antonio, but alas the real world gets in the way. Great job y’all!

Finally, yeah I don’t agree with Legacy’s placement. My brother and I were stunned when called them for 10th. Just so weird. Every year there seems to be one really odd placement (but such is the nature of Texas band I guess).

Exactly. Take Highland Park for example. Very small 5A band yet placed 2nd in 2019 and won area again this year. They march and play really well and at least partially overcome the band size deficit.

I was thinking of this exact group. When I was in high school it always annoyed me how high they placed over us but looking at it as a more experienced marcher and tech they're piss clean and that works for UIL.

I don’t quite get the point of this comment, respectfully, I think people are just a little confused, that’s all. All is happening is us trying to make the placement make sense. I didn’t even go to Legacy, and I think it was strange.

It really is a good feeling. Reading about all the other really, really, good bands that have advanced, I'll consider it a true victory if Summit lands in the top half.

All this size talk is really funny and strange. I don’t know where you all get your numbers but I’d be willing to bet that Centennial marched the fewest winds out of anyone in finals tonight.

This area was super tough and every group brought it. I saw every finalist perform in prelims and finals and the ones who advanced tonight either matched a really good performance from prelims or definitely improved. Most of the ones who didn’t advance did not have as good a run tonight as they did earlier in the day (Midlo is the biggest exception). That’s just the way the contest goes.

Congrats to all the bands today and I’m extremely proud of these kids at Centennial!

Summit's been having a great season so far. Wherever they finish at state they should be proud of what they've accomplished.
