BandFan59 Posted November 15, 2021 Posted November 15, 2021 Pretty strong lineup with Coppell, Hebron, and Cedar Park attending. I know Vandegrift used to come here too but it looks like they haven't been back in a few years. Should be a good competition. Quote

Should be a very good and thoroughly entertaining contest! Quote
RodanSt Posted November 18, 2021 Posted November 18, 2021 Vandegrift didn't go in 2019 because of grand nats, and this year they aren't going because of region orchestra in LISD. They should be back at this contest in future years. Quote

VinoGirl Posted November 21, 2021 Posted November 21, 2021 What is the difference between the two different divisions? Quote
MikeKyu Posted November 21, 2021 Posted November 21, 2021 Been saying all year that Cedar Park's line and front ensemblenare beastly. This show and Dripping Springs prove my observation wasn't too bad. slowbrass 1 Quote

Expand I believe Silver is for larger drumlines and red is for smaller. D1 are advanced and D2 are novice, though it's up to each drumline to choose between D1 and D2, so sometimes you'll see some pretty strong drumlines competing in D2 and vice versa. Did anyone happen to catch the D2 results? VinoGirl 1 Quote
VinoGirl Posted November 21, 2021 Posted November 21, 2021 Congrats to Highland Park percussion. 😊 They were a huge part of HP’s scores at state. Those are some awesome and talented kids. Quote

bingogooberman Posted November 24, 2021 Author Posted November 24, 2021 Some things that jump out to me- This is Cedar Park's 4th Caldwell Cup (highest score overall), having previously won in 2009, 2017 and 2020. I'm pretty certain this is the most of any school, though results from the 1990s are unavailable. Though the caption awards have no bearing on your actual placement, it's still notable that Cedar Park won without taking a single caption. Not sure I've ever seen that happen. Coppell has really established themselves as a drumline powerhouse in the last few years. After breaking through with a Caldwell Cup win in 2019, they haven't missed a beat. Also, their non-varisty handily outscored several other schools' top groups. Very impressive. Is John Horn back??? I'm sure many of you are aware that it wasn't that long ago that Horn had a brief but glorious run as one of the absolute best drumlines in the country from about 2012-2014, absolutely dominating this contest in those years. They fell off pretty abruptly after that, but this is unquestionably their strongest finish here since then. Lastly, as a former bass line section leader at Newman Smith, I have to shout them out for taking the bass caption here. Very proud! LeanderMomma 1 Quote

If memory serves me correctly, at that time, if a D2 group posted the highest score, even when judged by an entirely separate panel as they were in those days, they'd recognize them as the highest scoring group, even though Cedar Park was in all likelihood the stronger drumline. It happened again the next year when LBJ HS in Austin had the highest score, again in D2 Silver, while John Horn had the highest D1 score of the night. Unless I'm totally making all this up, lol, the first time I distinctly remember the Caldwell Cup going to the highest scoring D1 group when a D2 group had technically outscored them was Cedar Ridge in 2016 with Forney posting a higher score in D2. Now the contest is a bit smaller and usually has just one panel so it doesn't matter anymore. Quote
