ChristopherRoden
This contest seemingly has quite a few bands that typically perform at similar calibers. Does anyone dare rank them?

It's such an early season contest it's hard to tell where a band can place if this is their first contest of the season which it usually is. We have to think about new director changes, early season trends, past placements, area results, and word on how they are doing right now. With this in mind the only safe prediction to say is first place goes to the Woodlands, everything else is really up for grabs and the list anyone predicts is probably going to be super flawed no matter what cause this contest is so up in the air. But i'm also curious to see how people rank them

There has been a lot of shuffling in the wave of COVID so I’m sure TWHS isn’t the only one

Does anyone dare rank them? I posted mine in the HornRank forums a few weeks ago, with some minor updates here. Even though The Woodlands had two director changes for this upcoming year, I have no doubt this show is theirs to lose. Places 2-4 could really go either way. Klein Oak had a phenomenal season last year and seem to be on the rise, along with Wylie East, who narrowly outscored the former at San Antonio, and also has a mostly new design team. Pearland has also been through some director changes, and took 11th at this very contest last year after being 3rd in music and 15th in visual for prelims, before shooting up to 3rd at Katy the following week after cleaning some things. A fluke? Perhaps. While early season trends do come into play, I still can't see them placing out of the top 5 here, barring another bad run. The rest really is a crapshoot from there. We could definitely see bands like Obra D. Tompkins, Clear Brook and Bridgeland make finals here, too. 1. The Woodlands H.S., TX2. Klein Oak H.S., TX3. Wylie East H.S., TX4. Pearland H.S., TX5. James E. Taylor H.S., TX6. Oak Ridge H.S., TX7. Cy-Fair H.S., TX8. James Martin H.S., TX9. Dawson H.S., TX10. College Park H.S., TX11. Friendswood H.S., TX12. Stephen F. Origin
The Woodlands is about where I would expect them to be post major director changes. The show so far feels like a continuation of the themes they’ve had since 2019, which I appreciate. Definitely some struggle in the winds, but TWHS is never known for being clean early. There are great moments in there too where you can hear that classic Woodlands sound. Guard is still crazyyyy good. Some of the drill is…interesting. Lots of blocks moving across the field. Rubisco
You guys had me rushing over to YouTube for these Leander and TWHS videos. Just when I think I can go without videos this early in the season... Honestly, even when the Blue Devils did Tank!, it sounded a little plodding and "left-right-left-right," to quote you. But yeah, there are some apparent blending and tuning issues, and the music isn't as dynamic as it could be. They've set the bar for themselves very high, which is stressful, but I believe they have what it takes to eventually get there. Guard is once again outstanding and will have no competition in Texas, and barely any outside of the state as well, although they won't encounter those groups this marching season. takigan
I'd even go a step further to say The Woodlands probably won't lose much steam at all. Their program leadership has always been very decentralized compared to most schools. From 2009 to 2010 TWHS lost head director Brett Johnson and assistant Chris Allen in the same year, and they went from 3rd at San Antonio in '09 to 4th in '10. To be fair Joni's promotion was an internal one and that *can* make a difference. Usually when you ask a head director with a more top-down approach what their secret to success is, they'll start delving into their daily procedure and go into meticulous detail about creating characteristic sounds player by player or talk about their personal relationship with the students and how they get the students to respond to their teaching etc. I've seen many a program led by that "Herman Boone" type figure (from "Remember the Titans") where they have the larger than life persona that moves students towards a purpose. And when that teacher ultimately leaves, the program crumbles. Both Brett Johnson and Joni Perez have gone on record as basically saying something along the lines of "picking strong lesson teachers, strong marching staff, and cultivating strong student leadership" when asked the secret of The Woodlands's success.
