They have the potential to win major BOA contests. They just weren't very well served by their somewhat confusing show design last year. That, and there were some distracting guard weaknesses. I'm excited to see what they bring this year. They could be a bigger threat to Vandy at BOA Austin than people think! I think Vandy will always have BOA Austin locked and loaded but I don’t think that means Vandy will be on top of Vista at the end of the season…take that as you will. I’ve gotten the rare privilege to see a little bit of every show coming out of Leander ISD except Tom Glenn, some more than others. They’re all coming together really nicely. You can’t forget bands like Keller and Cedar Ridge who are going to be coming in hot with their 2023 productionsA lot of bands next season are looking to step it up to that next level. I mention them both because I’ve heard them and they sound amazing. Rubisco, LostChoirGuy and Vidal28 3 Quote
Popular Post LostChoirGuy Posted August 18, 2022 Popular Post Posted August 18, 2022 Keller and Cedar Ridge are two of the most consistent bands in terms of music quality and performance. Last year Cedar Ridge had a great show design to match and Keller has had some glimpses of that on past years. I think it's only a matter of time before one of them medals at a major event (state or BOA super regional). Keller has never placed in the top half of finals at BOA San Antonio despite being there consistently for about a decade. I'd love to see that change. J-Mike16, Franus and LeanderMomma 3 Quote
AWildAltoSax Posted August 18, 2022 Posted August 18, 2022 All of the bands this year seem to be putting out great things this year! Very interested for Rouse, Marcus, Flowermound, Seven Lakes, and especially Cypress Woods. Rubisco and BaritoneBallah 2 Quote

I came away impressed in a way I do not recall feeling before. I'll put it this way: My son (who is a band alum) is about as tough a critic on his former bad as you will find. He said he got goosebumps. Looking very much forward to hearing them at some point, there’s probably a show announcement with repertoire out there somewhere, and I would love to be more intrigued if I knew that and get even more excited, I just don’t like not knowing any details!😂 I wanna listen to some show rep of every school out there👀 Edit: I’m also a bit of a critic of what my former school puts out a few years removed from graduating, but I’m always optimistic in their opportunities to grow during their season and moving forward as I do know it is summer previews! MikeKyu Posted August 27, 2022 Posted August 27, 2022 I just saw a recording of Cedar Park's Mirror Mirror. This is not the Cedar Park of the last few years. The sound is HUGE! It's brassy and mixed with some great front ensemble licks that get mimicked by the woods and brass later. They have not done brass licks like this in the past. Oh my....The director has put his stamp on the new Cedar Park sound I believe. This was the vision he had when I spoke with him about it a few years ago. Show design is hard to tell at this point in time and will change. There are some very bold large scale movements early. They have clearly designed this show for BOA contests. Quote

The person who shared with me doesn't want their videos shared out. I wish I could but I need to respect their wishes. slowbrass Posted August 27, 2022 Posted August 27, 2022 Unsurprisingly, the level of technique in Hebron's opener (which they performed tonight along with what I assume is a preshow) is extremely high. Hard to tell so early in the season with all the work that lies ahead but they're looking strong. peshbandkid and MikeKyu 2 Quote
MikeKyu Posted August 27, 2022 Posted August 27, 2022 I love what Hebron achieves every year. I am very excited to see what they are serving up this year. Quote
Tubalord11 Posted August 28, 2022 Posted August 28, 2022 Was able to find videos of Regan snd CTJ! Have seen Klein Oka who sounds unbelievably incredible so far and the woodlands who also sound fantastic. Regans show reminds of Regan from last year a lot. Don’t know them theme but they are good just not a super hard show based on what was given. CTJ…. Wow oh wow!!! They sound incredible right now! The beginning of the show is so cool with the props and the sound fantastic! Honestly think they can take boa Katy! It’s gonna be one heck of a show and year for them! Quote
josephbandfan Posted August 28, 2022 Posted August 28, 2022 I can't believe the marching season is underway 🤪 Quote
Tubalord11 Posted August 28, 2022 Posted August 28, 2022 Hendrickson had a video up! Show theme seems a little under powering for a nats show but they sound incredible for this early season! Some low brass stick outs here and there, but the percussion is on fire and once they clean up visually which it’s pretty good rn, they will be fantastic! Definitely could see this making finals at nats! Quote

Popular Post Rubisco Posted August 29, 2022 Popular Post Posted August 29, 2022 Of course, it always needs to be emphasized that these are EXTREMELY early performances, just about the earliest ones possible. Avon doesn't seem to have missed a beat with their head director change. That's not really a surprise. They've still got Harloff. The opener is fast-paced and very exciting, with both the band and guard in constant motion. Actually, I think I'll end up liking this opener more than last year's. Powerful sounds. Overall it's pretty muddy musically and visually right now, but nothing beyond what's typical. Guard demonstrates outstanding blending of the movement with the equipment skills, such grace and fluidity; they're moving from place to place so frequently they have to have that. The rifle line seems considerably bigger than last year at first glance. Quite a few drops right now, but they'll get there. Many of the Texas groups do seem a little weaker than usual, even for this point in the season. Visually, maybe they're par for the course, but I feel like musically the best bands usually hit the ground running. CTJ still seems to have that magic. Their opener is a strange but appealing mishmash of Gustav Holst's The Planets. In typical CTJ fashion, they don't stay too long on any one musical idea, any one Planet, opting to flit like a hummingbird here and there and everywhere. Sometimes this results in some interesting cross-pollination of the musical ideas. CTJ always leans heavily into that variety aspect of the effect sheets, in previous years at the expense of continuity and flow. But this year, at least for the opener, I don't have as much of a problem with it, maybe because it all just registers in my mind as Planets. The music is consistently interesting and exciting. The visual program wasn't readable from the video, but at the field level it looks challenging. It will probably be difficult to clean, but I suppose they're used to that by now! BandFan95 Posted August 30, 2022 Posted August 30, 2022 Saw Westwood's opener on Friday. They are father along that I have seen them in years (yes even when my daughter was marching with them.) They are smaller than in years past, and perhaps that has everything to do with the fact that this show is super clean already. They still have that booming sound. It was so good that the Eastview band staff said, "they are this far, this good, ALREADY?!?!" New drill designer and change to their music makes this show so different than in years past. Westwood is all grown up. LeanderMomma and BaritoneBallah 2 Quote

packwick Posted August 31, 2022 Posted August 31, 2022 i like CTJ's opener music as well. interesting stuff, kinda like an Asian fusion. for some reason my mind went back to that classic Tae Bo moment in Reagan's 2002 show. hahaha. sounds kinda sorta classic Reagan, doesn't it? Quote

The versions of the Planets we hear in the pre-show kinda remind me of the Isao Tomita renditions done on synth! I wonder if inspiration was taken from there, or if they just went for a space age style sound. Quote
