Tubalord11 Posted November 3, 2023 Posted November 3, 2023 29 minutes ago, Samuel Culper said: The risk in taking Area results and trying to project them to State is the way the ordinal system works. At Area, you typically have a limited number of really top-level bands. And the ones who ARE there are going to be grouped closely together just because of those limited numbers. It's a different story at State. At State the lineup is loaded. Two bands who may have been right next to one another in the rankings at Area may suddenly find 5 or 7 bands between them at State. Repeat that across seven judges and two bands close to one another at Area could turn into one comfortably in Finals and another well on the outside at State. And for those wondering, this is my exact reason I have them first out, using Area results in the past to predict state has been my downfall, not this year, but I’d absolutely love for Richland to make it to finals, loved their music book last year! This happens allllll the time at Area. Usually everything shakes out as it's supposed to at state though. I remember my senior year at Clements, our ordinals were 1,1,1,1,9 so we got 2nd place behind Pearland who had 2,3,3,3,1 ordinals. Adding them all up they had 12 and we had 13 so they won the area. This is just one of many many many examples that happen on area nights, some of the strangest and shocking nights in texas marching band seasons each year! lost 1 Quote
Popular Post Anthony V Posted November 3, 2023 Popular Post Posted November 3, 2023 Speaking as a Richland alum: I will always be over-the-moon to see great results from Richland. This is the manifestly the best Richland has been since 2016, and I sincerely hope they get very soon to the level of competitivity they were in 2005 and 2007. I personally think it is possible within the next year or so. That said, what I have been less excited to see lately is hype that approaches the level of cringe. I have zero authority here, but I would kindly ask alum, parents, fans, &c., to consider whether their support for Richland on a public forum is constructive to the conversation. If your point has already been made, indeed made several times, I promise you that insisting upon your point will not augment other persons' perceptions of Richland -- but will in fact deteriorate them. For better or worse, people will generally remember the negative interactions better than they will positive interactions. If Richland is your home team -- whether as an alum, parent, fan, &c. -- I think it makes more sense to let future results do the insisting. I'm pretty sure they'll get here soon enough. Regardless of placement, getting a feel for the Alamodome and procedural things regardless of slight differences in UIL and BOA procedures can be really helpful for easing nerves. I don’t think it’ll make a huge or giant difference, but it’ll be noticeable in the way groups carry themselves. FHorn26 1 Quote
bsk Posted November 5, 2023 Posted November 5, 2023 In addition to the two Leander 6A bands finishing 1st and 4th at San Antonio BOA, their three 5A bands that made state finished between 6th and 10th. Another 5A band, Wakeland, also made finals (13th). That seems like a darn good showing for 5A bands. Monday should be a fun competition for state prelims. Bdc22 1 Quote
