Popular Post BandNerd07 Posted October 12, 2023 Author Popular Post Posted October 12, 2023 So here is how advancement works: Area Prelims to Area Finals If there are less than 10 bands that qualify for area, there is only one round. If 10 to 19 bands qualify for area, the top 7 bands move to finals. If there are 20 to 29 bands that qualify, the top 10 bands move to finals. If there are 30 or more bands (in this case we have 35), the top 12 bands move to finals Area Finals to State If there are less than 15 bands that qualify for area, the top 2 bands will advance to state. Once you hit 15 bands, then one band per every 5 bands will advance to state (ex: 15-19 bands = 3 state bands, 20-24 bands = 4 state bands, etc). In this case we have 35 bands that will qualify for area, so if you do the math, we will have 7 bands advance to state this year. Tubalord11, JazzRun, Gehrig4 and 2 others 3 2 Quote

BandNerd07 Posted October 12, 2023 Author Posted October 12, 2023 As far as the schedules go, I think this is how it might look. Note that this is from the draw order, but I'm putting this as a schedule. I think there could be 5 blocks, with 7 bands in each block. 7:00. Arlington 7:15. Bell 7:30. Fossil Ridge 7:45. Duncanville 8:00. Bowie 8:15. Pearce 8:30. Grand Prairie 8:45. Judges Break 9:00. Trinity 9:15. South Grand Prairie 9:30. Southlake Carroll 9:45. Highland Park 10:00. Timber Creek 10:15. Mansfield 10:30. Weatherford 10:45. Lunch Break 11:30. MacArthur 11:45. Haltom 12:00. Berkner 12:15. Keller Central 12:30. Lake Ridge 12:45. Lake Highlands 1:00. Paschal 1:15. Judges Break 1:30. Martin 1:45. Keller 2:00. Cedar Hill 2:15. Boswell 2:30. Chisholm Trail 2:45. Coppell 3:00. Nimitz 3:15. Judges Break 3:30. Legacy 3:45. Richardson 4:00. Desoto 4:15. Waxahachie 4:30. Crowley 4:45. North Crowley 5:00. Irving Tubalord11 and LostChoirGuy 2 Quote
LostChoirGuy Posted October 12, 2023 Posted October 12, 2023 That third block from Haltom to Lake Highlands pitches several finals bubble bands next to each other which I think is really good for the direct comparison. Quote

Just watched watched their show for UIL and darn Expand Yeah, Duncanville is a very talented band that is one of the best in the state, but I just never really get why they don't go to that many comps, which is why I think they are underrated. They haven't been to anything yet, with BOA Prosper being their first one this year, while most other bands have been to at least 2. And it's not just this year either. Last year all they went to was USBands Burleson, where they won. Does anyone have like a backstory for Dville? Quote

That part of Dallas may not be a great place (I’ve never been so someone correct me if I’m wrong, I’ve been to Dallas and it‘a pretty bad in some areas) and this may be the case for D-Ville. And seeing how many different Dallas schools there are, they probably only have the money to attend one or two comps other than the UIL stuff Clarinet Lord 1 Quote

Expand As a Dville band alumni and someone who grew up in Duncanville I’ll chime in a bit. Dville is not a bad place to live at all however it’s nowhere near as well off as some of the other parts of the state and money can prove to be an issue for many. Consequently, many students (myself included when I was there) required financial assistance in some way shape of form. Thankfully, the program has an INCREDIBLE booster program, culture/traditions, and a high standard of education/teaching. Rather than using the money raised to go to a bunch of competitions every season, it is invested into the students themselves so that any student can have private lessons despite their situation and to ensure that no student ever has to pay a “band fee” just to be a member of the band. Despite the circumstances, Dville has 3 state championships to their name, a music caption at Grand Nationals, and one of if not the longest streaks of any 6A band for consecutive advancements to state going every cycle from 1984-2018 (missed it in 2021 but returned in 2022). Although Dville is not at the peak of where they used to be, they’ve always stuck around and are a program that can never be counted out. (I am extremely biased towards this program so sorry if this comes across as a little preachy 😭) RaElk99, MrMusic5002, azs4tvls and 11 others 14 Quote

Expand I would like to bring some attention to Duncanville (as a former band alumni). Duncanville has always had their focus on UIL scoring/rubrics. After Tom Shine had retired in 2010, the two head band directors afterwards always had their main focus on UIL as BOA scoring/rubrics were challenging consistent traditions set in place for 30+ years with Tom Shine. It had worked for almost three decades, but marching band contests began to change and what was working; no longer had the same result produced as previous years. We were always taught tradition and clean marching w/o props would suffice many years (even with bands incorporating props), but that later changed due to the ongoing and ever changing environment within the marching band atmosphere. Tradition is great, but it no longer held priority. Duncanville Band had a wonderful past with many accolades spanning over 30+ years, but we soon realized that although the past was great. It’s not going to keep the longevity of the band alive itself. Shifting from being a traditional band to encompassing the modernization of bands like Hebron, Marcus, Flower Mound, Vandegrift, etc. took longer than it should have (even with opinions and suggestions from us band kids when we were in the band). We supported going to BOA and many competitions, but the problem wasn’t finances, partially (as these competitions weren’t out of anyone’s desire) it was switching our directors mindset from performing in competitions where first place was very easy to get to going to actual competitions with bands in the same caliber as us. Also, while focusing more on UIL and BOA together to produce and be “with the times”. Duncanville has a new head band director with a brand new staff (none of the staff from the past is with them any longer) and I think that’s why you’re seeing a change. There’s going to be more BOA competition participations, new changes to how Duncanville is known and how the show’s are developed and that’s what Duncanville needed. This won’t be an overnight success or change as many current band individuals and recent one’s know the main big hitters, but hopefully they will get there. Drill and visual wise they improved greatly, but sound wise they went down a little bit. Their music is also not very impactful, it has little to no big hits that make me go wow. However the band as a whole is still beautiful sounding. Quote
